Nurturing the Mind and Body

Enemas have been used in various ancient cultures to promote healing and to help clear the colon.

The enema introduces liquid, usually water by means of an enema bag, into the anus which leads to the rectum and colon. The movement of liquid into the body tends to stimulate the colon to release faecal matter. Therefore enemas may be used for clearing the rectum, sigmoid colon and possibly some of the descending colon of faecal matter.

The enema can also be used to introduce a substance into the bloodstream via the anus. The action of this type of enema depends upon the therapeutic effect of the substance added to the enema. For example a chamomile enema has a calming effect on the body.

Types of Enema

  1. Clearing Enema – The fluid usually water is expelled as soon as it is taken into the body. This type of enema helps to clear the colon
  2. Retention Enema – The fluid is retained within the body for around 15-20 minute so that it can be absorbed into the body via the blood stream and have a specific therapeutic effect.
TypeWhen Should it Be applied?Effects
Water Enema A water enema is useful when:
  • The bowel is showing signs of constipation
  • Help is required to keep movement and release of wastes and toxicity during a detoxification program
  • The lymphatic system is showing signs of stagnation e.g.) cold, flu, sore throat
  • You wish to improve hydration quickly e.g.) after a long haul flight
  1. Prepare 1 litre of body temperature filtered water
  2. Follow how to do an enema
  3. Hold water for 10-15 minutes and then expel
  • Creates movement within the colon encouraging the release of faeces
  • Stimulates nerve reflex points within the colon which in turn are connected to the rest of the body
  • Movement within the colon stimulates the movement and release of mucous from the lymphatic system
  • Water held within the colon will be absorbed by the body which in turn improves hydration
  • On completion there is usually a feeling of lightness
  • Occasionally if the body is dehydrated the colon will retain the water so that no evacuation takes place
Triple Water Enema A triple water enema is ideal at the onset of a cold or flu, sore throat or sinus congestion as it stimulates the lymphatic system to clear. The extra stimulation brought upon by this technique often ensures that the body does not need to create a fever to thin the congested lymphatic fluid.

  1. Prepare 1 litre of body temperature filtered water
  2. Follow hhow to do an enema
  3. Massage the colon and then expel
  4. Repeat 1-3 for a total of 3 times
  • It is advisable to do this technique at the end of the day as it can cause tiredness
Aloe Vera Enema An aloe vera enema is ideally suited to any inflammatory condition within the digestive system. Aloe vera is a moisturiser and soother so its presence in the enema can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the mucosa of the colon.

  1. Prepare 1 litre of body temperature filtered water
  2. Add between 1-10 tablespoons of aloe vera depending on intensity required:
    • Mild: 1-2 tablespoons
    • Medium: 3-5 tablespoons
    • Strong : 6-10 tablespoons

Coffee Enema Coffee enemas are useful when a detoxification programme is underway. It helps to accelerate the liver’s ability to detoxify and will reduce any risk of overload resulting in auto-intoxication
  • Coffee enemas may also be used to reduce pain such as migraine.
  • Coffee has a diuretic effect so this technique should be done as part of a supervised programme which includes steps to replace lost electrolytes.

  1. Place 1 rounded tablespoon of organic ground coffee in a non-aluminium pan
  2. Add ½ litre of filtered water and bring to the boil
  3. Simmer for 15 minutes
  4. Sieve coffee mixture into a large glass jug
  5. Add enough filtered cold water to make the coffee solution up to a litre. Make sure the mixture is at body temperature
  6. Follow how to do an enema but lie on right side to encourage flow to the liver
  7. Hold for 15-20 minutes and then expel
  • The coffee is absorbed into the haemorrhoidal vein within the colon and transported to the liver by the portal system. When the coffee arrives at the liver it causes the liver to contract. This results in the release of toxicity into the bile fluid which is released by the contraction of the liver into the duodenum. This toxic bile is then passed out of the body via the digestive tract leaving the liver in a less congested state.
  • On completion there is often a feeling of being less toxic: clear headed, better mood, clear vision
  • Aches and pains are often reduced
  • Nausea is often reduced or eliminated by this technique
Chamomile Enema A chamomile enema helps to calm the body and has a soothing effect on the liver.

  4. Sieve mixture and add enough filtered water to make the mixture up to 1 litre. Make sure mixture is body temperature before using.
  5. Follow how to do an enema
  6. Hold for 15-30 minutes and expel

  • Chamomile is a sedative and when taken as an enema it will be absorbed via the haemorrhoidal vein and is transported to the liver via the portal blood system.
  • Chamomile has a calming effect on the liver and the body.
  • On completion of this technique there is often a feeling of calmness, especially within the digestive system
Magnesium Enema Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and is useful in the following situations:

  1. Dissolve 1-3 capsules of magnesium citrate capsules (each capsule delivering 100mg of elemental magnesium) in a cup of hot filtered water.
  2. Add enough filtered water to the magnesium solution to make it up to 1 litre. Make sure the solution is body temperature before using.
  3. Follow how to do an enema
  4. Hold for 15-20 minutes and then expel

According to Dr Johanna Budwig, The electrons of highly unsaturated fats from seed oils, which lie on the same wavelength as sunlight, are capable of drawing solar energy and storing it.

Flaxseeds contain a high level of electron rich unsaturated fats making it useful to start treatments with a flaxseed enema as it helps to promote photon and electron activity within the body

  • On completion there is often an enhanced feeling of calmness and connectedness.
Rejuvelac Enema

A good technique to use after  a course of antibiotics or any cleansing of the colon such as a colonic or water enema.
