I love the idea of combining cooled herbal tea with fresh juices. You get the therapeutic properties of the tea combined with the fresh juice. The addition of the tea to the drink also helps to lower the levels of fruit sugar if you are juicing fruit. Excessive fruit sugar (fructose) can burden the liver as this is where fructose is processed. If liver health is poor or the liver is over taxed then consuming more fructose than the body can handle may lead to issues like a fatty liver. It's fair to say that most people will have liver issues as modern day living presents daily challenges for the liver.

Peppermint tea is a cooling, digestive tonic which helps refresh and clear the mind. Peppermint particularly when taken as a tea helps reduce spasms in the digestive system and may be used to relieve IBS-type symptoms too. Peppermint contains menthol, which acts as a decongestant and promotes clearer breathing. Menthol relaxes blood vessels and muscle plus it is analgesic too so is helpful in relieving headaches too. Peppermint's cooling action can help to relieve heat related conditions which are often signs of an overworked liver. Common symptoms related to an overworked liver include itching skin, stinging eyes, headaches and menopausal hot flashes/flushes.

In this drink, I've used apple to complement the taste of peppermint. Apple naturally contains pectin, which also supports digestion and the gut flora. Pectin promotes movement of digesting food and helps bind toxins in the gut like heavy metals which can then be naturally released out with the rest of the digestive waste.

An easy drink to make with loads of health benefits.

Ingredients

1 tbsp dried peppermint tea or 3-4 fresh peppermint leaves
1 apple

Method

  1. I added around 200ml of hot water to 1 tbsp of dried peppermint leaves. Alternatively you could use 3-4 fresh peppermint leaves. I left this to brew and cool down to room temperature. I then refrigerated the tea so that it was completely cool when serving. if you want a stronger peppermint taste then simmer the tea for around 15 minutes in a suitable pan.

  2. When I was ready to make my juice I simply juiced an apple and added the same quantity of cooled peppermint tea to the apple juice.

Cooled mint tea may be stored in a suitable airtight glass container in the fridge for around 5 days. So brew up a large batch to add to your fresh juices. I have combined mint tea with freshly juiced apple but this juice would work well with cucumber, celery or pear.

Some Precautions with this Juice

If you are pregnant or taking medications like for example, lowering blood sugar, blood pressure etc then please be aware that peppermint taken regularly in a juice may interfere with the action of these medications. If you experience GERD (gastro oesophageal reflux disease) then peppermint tea may aggravate symptoms. If you are allergic to menthol then avoid using mint. Please consult your health professional for further advice.
