Welcome back, with Winter on its way out we had our first spring like weekend. I took the opportunity to start clearing the planting beds and pruning overgrown plants and bushes. This made me think about the importance of clearing space and making room to support the new growth of Spring. This process can and should be applied to the body at this time of the year. My focus for Spring is about supporting the body for change and new growth.

If you remember, from earlier blogs, I am not a fan of detoxification during Winter were energy needs to be conserved. However, Spring is the time when gently clearing the body supports new physical, emotional and mental growth.

Freshly pressed juices are a great way to promote detoxification. For a few days the thought of freshly pressed beetroot and red cabbage juice was coming into my mind. I love the deep purple/red colour and earthy, sweet taste of beetroot and thought about combining it with red cabbage which, also has an incredible purple colour.

Red Cabbage Health Benefits

Red cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable with many health benefits

  • The high sulphur content, promotes and supports the detoxification functions of the liver.
  • Helps to build the blood. Any fruit or vegetable with red or blue colour supports blood tissue.
  • Cabbage is an alkalising food which helps to maintain the acid/alkali balance.
  • Helps to lower elevated cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Promotes healing and helps to lower inflammation. Studies have been shown that cabbage juice helps stomach ulcers to heal.

Some of the common nutrients found in red cabbage include:

  • Beta-carotene - An antioxidant which helps prevent cell damage. Can be converted to vitamin A, which supports skin and the mucous membranes within the body.
  • Vitamin C - Antioxidant, which helps to prevent cell damage. An essential component of collagen, which strengthens all soft tissues like gums, blood vessels and so on
  • Vitamin K - Supports health bone tissue and is an essential component for blood clotting process and wound healing.
  • Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) - Promotes healthy red blood cells, supports rapid cellular division and growth especially during pregnancy and infancy
  • Potassium - Helps to maintain acid/alkali balance within the body. A key electrolyte which helps to maintain body fluids, muscle & nerve functioning. Potassium supports the correct movement of nutrients and wastes in and out of the cells.
  • Calcium - Supports bones, teeth, muscles and nerves. Important component of many enzyme reactions in the body.

A earthy, sweet tasting root which like red cabbage has many health properties:

  • Promotes the building of healthy blood tissue, prevents fatigue and anaemia.
  • Helps to lower elevated cholesterol and blood pressure, which lowers the risks of heart disease and strokes
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Helps to satisfy sugar cravings.
  • Great for pregnant mums, the nutrients like folic acid, magnesium and iron all help to support a healthy pregnancy

  • Silica which promotes the absorption of calcium  and the body's use of calcium
  • Nitrates, which are converted in the body to nitrites. Nitrates and nitrites help open blood vessels and promote blood flow
  • Beta-cyanin, a phytonutrient, which forms the deep red colour of beetroot. Beta-cyanin has been found to slow the growth of tumours. In a study done at the Howard University, Washington DC, it was found that beta-cyanin helped slow the growth of tumours by 12.5% in patients with breast and prostate cancer.
  • Potassium - Helps to maintain acid/alkali balance within the body. A key electrolyte which helps to maintain muscle & nerve functioning. Potassium supports the correct movement of nutrients and wastes in and out of the cells.
  • Magnesium, an important mineral supporting nerves, muscle and many enzyme-related processes within the body.
  • Iron, supports healthy red blood cells and helps to prevent anaemia
  • Beta-carotene and vitamin C, important anti-oxidants which prevent cellular damage.
  • B vitamins: including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 and B9 (folic acid). The B-complex vitamins primarily support energy production within the body.

Beetroot and Red cabbage Juice

A beautiful purple red colour, packed with so many nutrients. A sweet, earthy drink with spicy undertones. Perfect for supporting detoxification.

Ingredients

1/4 red cabbage
1 beetroot, including the greens
1 apple

  1. Wash all the produce and then process it with a juicing machine.
  2. For maximum benefit, drink this juice immediately (dilute with a little water if it tastes too strong.)

If you are not used to drinking fresh juices, which can be quite potent, start with smaller amounts like 1/4 of a glass building up to 1 glass/day.
