Mums Turmeric Poultice

I am at the end of a week-long look at turmeric and the best ways to take this spice therapeutically. I feel that I have just barely scratched the surface with this amazing spice. As promised, I am sharing my mum's turmeric poultice. My brothers, sisters and myself included have had plenty of experience of this treatment.

Every sprained ankle in my family was treated in this way!  

Today I will share mum's turmeric poultice recipe, which contains:

  • Turmeric - Anti-inflammatory, blood thinning, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. It helps to relieve pain and promotes healing
  • Castor Oil - contains a unique fatty acid ricinoleic acid, which is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. It helps to transport turmeric into the body via the skin, promoting healing whilst supporting the immune system
  • Himalayan Salt - Antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and alkalising
  • Flour - acts to bind all the ingredients together

By the way be warned it stains the skin yellow but this disappears in 2-3 days.

If you want to have a go at this simple treatment for easing muscular/joint issues, please do a patch test first to check for any sensitivity to the ingredients. Apply a little of the poultice to the inside of your arm and wait for 24 hours. If there are no adverse reactions then have a go. In my family we have been using this poultice for years to ease aches, pains and sprains.

Mum's Turmeric Poultice

1 tbsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp salt (I used Himalayan salt)
2 tbsp castor oil (sesame oil may also be used or olive oil)
2-3 tbsp plain flour
Water

These amounts are enough to treat a sprained ankle.

Method

  1. In a stainless steel saucepan, measure out the turmeric, castor oil and salt.

  2. In a stainless steel saucepan, mix the turmeric, oil and salt together to form a paste then add the first tablespoon of flour.

  3. Mix the flour in then add the remaining flour a tablespoon at a time. Stop when the mixture comes together in as a thck paste.

  4. Warm the turmeric mixture on a low flame (splash a few drops of water in the pan to prevent the turmeric from sticking or burning).
    When its done it will come together.

  5. You will need a strip of material large enough to cover the affected area. (cotton flannel is the best)

  6. Wait until the poultice has cooled down sufficiently to apply to the skin so that it is warm but not hot.
  7. Apply the poultice to one end of the cotton flannel. Be careful not to drop any, it stains!

  8. Now apply the poultice to the treatment area and cover by winding the rest of the flannel around if possible and then securing with a safety pin.

  9. As an extra precaution you could wrap some cling film around the flannel.

  10. Now rest the area for at least 2-3 hours. If you want you could apply additional heat by placing a warm water bottle over the treated area

The treatment may be repeated 2-3 times a day or left on overnight. 

icon-light-bulbTip: The same poultice can be re-used, just reheat it in a pan and add a little more castor oil if it is dry.

Store the poultice in the fridge when not using and it should be fine for a week.
