I've been dealing with toothache for the past 10 months, Basically an old filling dropped out and I left it too long without treatment so that when I did eventually have it re-filled there was some additional damage to the tooth plus nerve inflammation. Last week I blogged about using clove powder as a pain killer. Rubbing freshly ground clove powder around the affected gums really made a huge difference and helped to relieve pain. However pain is a symptom brought on by underlying issues of tooth demineralisation, nerve inflammation and nutrient imbalances.

So this week I'm sharing my strategies for reducing inflammation and supporting my tooth to heal from within. Here's the plan I've been following for the past couple of weeks.

  1. Cut out Sugar
    I've been avoiding sweeteners like sucrose, coconut sugar, jaggery, date syrup, maple syrup, honey, sweet fruits and any foods containing these sweeteners. After just a week of avoiding sugar, the pain dropped considerably and my teeth were no longer sensitive
    Dietary sugar promotes inflammation, dehydration and acidity. It encourages the growth of harmful micro-organisms so is the number one step. For more info about infection and sugar have a look at my previous blog

  2. Keep hydrated (8-10 glasses/day)
    I've been very busy and at times had forgotten to regularly drink. So what I do now is keep filling my cup with warm water and make sure that I continue to drink. Dehydration really stresses the body out, triggers water conservation and electrolyte imbalances which in turn promotes inflammation and pain within the body.

  3. Drink bone broth 2-3 cups/day and green smoothies 2-3/day
    Bone broth and smoothies made from green leafy vegetables are loaded with minerals which help alkalise and strengthen tissues like bones, joints, nerves, muscles. This type of food can reverse and help heal issues like sensitive teeth, which is essentially a symptom of demineralisation brought on to counteract acidity within the body tissues

  4. Supplement with omega 3 and vitamin D3
    Omega 3 helps to maintain flexibility within body tissues and supports the reduction of inflammation. at this time of the year when sunlight availability is low it makes good sense to supplement with D3 which supports bone/teeth health but also promotes good immunity and is the key to accessing the genes within each cell.

  5. Use transdermal magnesium to relax nerves and muscles
    Low magnesium levels promotes issues like pain and rigidity of nerves and muscles. I have found transdermal magnesium a particularly effective way of bringing magnesium into the body by simply spraying and rubbing into the skin. I have also used transdermal magnesium to ease sore gums by simply applying it to my gums.

  6. Use bicarbonate of soda, Himalayan salt and peppermint essential oil to clean teeth
    A mixture of bicarbonate of soda, Himalayan salt and peppermint essential oil is an effective cleanser for teeth and gums plus it helps to alkalise and inhibits microbial growth. I have used a little of this mixture on my toothbrush in place of tooth paste and I have also used it as a mouthwash. Other essential oils I have used in this way include clove oil and tea tree oil, which are also highly effective essential oils.

  7. Oil pulling with virgin coconut oil  
    Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique of swishing oil in the mouth for 10-15 minutes, before spitting it out. It supports effective cleansing of the mouth, gums and teeth but also promotes circulatory and lymphatic flow particularly in the mouth and throat. It really helps to remove mucous from the throat. Using virgin coconut oil in oil pulling which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, really helps to keep the mouth clean and helps to clear any infections in the mouth.

  8. Turmeric in my daily cup of red bush and green tea
    Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory, supports liver functioning and helps cleanse the blood. I have been dissolving 1/4 of a teaspoon in each cup of red bush (rooibos) and green tea I drink each day.

Just a reminder, I have had the tooth checked out by a dentist and received his recommendations  for treatment. With this knowledge however I have decided to use more natural and holistic healing techniques, which will take some time and dedication but will certainly be worth it.
