Nurturing the Mind and Body

My mum makes her special tea whenever anyone in the family gets colds or flu. It is so easy to make and just contains 3 simple fresh ingredients: onion, garlic and ginger. Now you could make this tea with just onion if that's all you have in the kitchen but it has a much better effect when all 3 ingredients are used.

As I'm feeling the sniffles today and feeling a bit tired too, this tea will definitely help to minimise and reduce my symptoms.

Ginger, garlic and onion all have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Ginger helps to promote circulatory and lymphatic flow plus it has a drying and heating effect, which can help to reduce mucous congestion and enhances immunity.

So simple yet elegantly powerful, here's my mum's recipe.

1 onion
1-2 inch piece of fresh ginger
1-2 cloves of fresh garlic

  1. I crushed the garlic and chopped  the onion after which I let them sit for around 5 minutes. This helps activate production of the therapeutic compound allicin found within onions and garlic.
  2. Next, I grated the ginger and then put all the ingredients into a pan and covered with hot water.
  3. I then brought the tea to the boil and simmered the mixture for around 15 minutes.
  4. The tea was then strained and I added a little freshly ground black pepper, which also helps clear mucous congestion and a little Himalayan salt to give the tea a more savoury broth-like flavour.

To this basic tea you could add other therapeutic ingredients like fresh lemon, turmeric, cinnamon or even a little green tea.

Despite the smell of onions and garlic, which comes from drinking this tea, I love its simplicity to make and powerful therapeutic nature, which helps enhance immunity combats infections and relieves many of the symptoms of colds and flu. Try it today, it really works. Just keep drinking it regularly throughout the day and stay away from processed foods and sugars.
