Homemade Berry Cordial

I am blessed with a creative family. In late summer, my clever sister-in-law made a tasty, refreshing elderflower cordial using flowers from her backgarden. For a family get together, I wanted some natural drinks to serve so I asked her to try making another cordial using autumn berry fruits.

This weekend she brought over 3 bottles filled with a luscious berry coctail made from strawberries, blueberries, grapes, blackberries, elder berries and a hint of cinnamon. Berry Fruit Cordial

Packed with vitamin C and bioflavenoids, berry fruits help strengthen blood vessels and contain powerful antioxidants. Anthocyanins, give blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and red grapes their glossy, dark colour This powerful phytonutrient found in berry fruits has been shown to lower hypertension and protects the brain from oxidative stress, which could even reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Drinking a homemade berry cordial helps to boost the immune system during the winter months. Best served at room temperature but would equally taste great mixed in yoghurt, porridge and home made coconut, oat or almond milks.

My sister-in-law used brown sugar to counteract the tart taste of berries. I suggested that she try using a less refined sweetener such as date syrup or raw honey.These low-refined sweeteners may be added after the berries have been cooked, strained and cooled to room temperature. I will post a suggested recipe soon!

Remember that refined sugar is low in minerals but requires a lot of nutrients to digest! Date syrup on the other hand contains small amounts of minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc so is not an empty calorific food.  You should be able to find it in ethnic grocery shops, in particular where Middle Eastern and South Asian foods are sold.
