The origins of Reiki are ancient but this form of energetic healing was re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese priest in the late19th century. Usui re-discovered a band of energy, which could be channelled for health and wellbeing. He called this energy Reiki (pronounced Ray Key).

Reiki works on the subtle energy levels of the body and involves transmitting a form of energy known as ‘universal energy’ via the practitioner to the client. This energy seeks to harmonise and balance the body.

Benefits of Reiki

Modern day life with its pressures of work, home and family life, often presents situation upon situation in which the possibility of becoming stressed is ever present. Long-term stress is particularly harmful to our bodies. Reiki helps to de-stress our bodies, which often leads to an increased level of self-awareness and an ability to cope. Reiki can aid the body’s ability to achieve an overall balance and is ideal for preventative health care.

  • The relief of stress and tension
  • Improved blood and lymph circulation
  • Stimulated immune system
  • Increased energy levels

Is Reiki Safe?

Reiki is a totally safe non-intrusive system, which directs energy, to balance all aspects of a person’s body, emotions, mind and spirit. Reiki is now often seen in many hospitals, hospices and is widely used in palliative healthcare.

What happens during a Reiki session?

An initial consultation, which includes a medical history is taken. Reiki is administered by either the practitioner laying their hands gently onto the body or from a short distance from the body. The client remains fully clothed during this process. A full treatment usually lasts for an hour.

Each individual’s experience of Reiki will be unique. Some of the common sensations felt during a Reiki session are heat, tingling, coolness and movement (often felt like wind blowing or water flowing) within the body.

The After Effects of receiving Reiki

Most people experience a deep level of relaxation after receiving reiki.

However you may experience feeling tired and heaviness. There may be an increase in elimination by sweat, urine or bowel movement. Other symptoms may develop such as feeling achey, headache or even a raised temperature. This is usually due to the treatment stimulating the movement and release of internalised toxicity. This is a natural mechanism of the body seeking to rebalance and should be supported.
